Creating the “Renaissance heyday”, making Florence the world art treasure.
Great-grandfather Giovanni created the business empire of the Medici family and disguised the nature of commercial capital by sponsoring art. Grandfather Cosimo stabilized the political status of the Medici family in the city through the sponsorship of art. Lorenzo was an art talent who was really "buried" by the business.
Lorenzo grew up with a passion for painting and sculpture. His father, Piero, was affected by gout. He seemed to realize his responsibilities early on, so he exercised restraint and honed his character. From an early age he was assigned to various social functions, including visits to Rome to meet with the Pope and other important religious and political events. Family and intelligence are natural, but what sets Lorenzo apart from other aristocrats is his optimism, sharpness, dexterity and high emotional intelligence.
In 1469,Not long after Lorenzo's 20-year-old marriage, his father died. The situation was very serious. The House of Medici was under attack, Lorenzo experienced a coup against the family and showed a bold and chivalrous side in order to save his people and country. He became a hero to the Florentine, known as “Lorenzo the Magnificent”, and successfully became the de facto ruler of the city.
From 1469 to 1492,Lorenzo ruled Florence for 23 years and his support for the development of artists reached an unprecedented level in academic and artistic patronage.
In 1488,Lorenzo founded the world's first art academy, the Medici Academy, where he took out his family's collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures and made artists learn and innovate.
It was then that Lorenzo, with his fierce eye and exquisite taste, discovered many talented men whose works have been admired for centuries. For example, the Renaissance "Three Masters of painting and sculpture": Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli, but also other famous artists.
It is said that one day when he was a 14-year-old apprentice, Michelangelo was busy carving an old Lorenzo de' Medici, reminding the teenager “How can an old man have all his teeth?”. The introverted Michelangelo blushed at the stranger's smile and immediately picked up a chisel to knock out the carved teeth. Soon after, Michelangelo was taken to the Palace of the Medici, where the 14-year-old could study and view a large number of works of art, together with the most prestigious humanism scholars and poets of the time. The impact on a teenager's skills, vision and values is self-evident: he got the first “art investment”
Lorenzo's admiration and yearning for art is not limited to sculpture and painting, of which architecture is an integral part.
In Giorgio Vasari's 《Biographies of Famous Painters, Sculptors and Architects》, Lorenzo de' Medici's name often appears
It is said that the old lady living in Italy may not know what day of the week it is, but she certainly knows what is on display in the gallery in front of her home. They say that Italy is a paradise for art lovers, a gift from the House of Medici in large part, and that Lorenzo is a very influential figure.
In 1492,When Lorenzo died of illness, the famous Italian political philosopher, musician and poet Machiavelli said of him:
"The prosperity of Florence, the unity of the people, and the popularity of the nobles were his aims. He doted on the outstanding talents of the art world, and was courteous to scholars... His superior character, shrewd handling of affairs and fortune in life made him admired not only by the monarchs and nobles of Italy, but also by people from afar. His conversation was quick and fluent, his decisions intelligent, his actions quick and decisive. He was deeply mourned by his people, and no man after him was known for his great wisdom, and he never died in Florence, or in Italy."
Although he did not like business by nature, Lorenzo, based on his responsibility to the Medici family and his love for art, built Florence into an unprecedented era of "all flowers blooming" in the art world.
Later, the Chamber of Commerce of Wool Manufacturers paid tribute to Lorenzo for his innovation, change and elegance, as well as for his passion and promotion of art, creating a symbol of the city of Florence.
